![]() ![]() It's the end of a chapter.Īnd the movie seems to understand that too, as the movie leaves those three heroes early on, sending Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) on a mission that finds him traveling back in time to save his late, doomed mother, and irreparably changing the present we've all known he finds Batman with an older face (now looking and sounding like Michael Keaton), Superman replaced by his cousin Supergirl (Sasha Calle), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa), well, he never even was born because his dad bought a bunch of dogs instead. The Flash treats itself like that too, bringing all sorts of characters back for their DCEU curtain calls, including Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Michael Shannon as Zod. And so it's essential to go into The Flash with the understanding that, in essence, this was going to be the final chapter of a story that, while it certainly had its ups and downs, was being written for essentially the last decade. That became even more clear in 2023 as Gunn began slowly revealing details for his first major slate-titled "Gods and Monsters"-for his new universe, dubbed the DCU. While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will still be released in theaters at the end of 2023, the writing was always on the wall that The Flash was going to, essentially, wrap up the entire DCEU era of the DC Comics characters in film. Gal Gadot? Don't expect too much more of her as Wonder Woman. WHEN JAMES Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios last year, it didn't take long for one thing to become abundantly clear: he was going to start most things over. ![]() Thinking the mainline Barry won't help him, Dark Flash tries to kill him, only for him to kill himself and the younger Barry when the latter shields the hero. The following story contains spoilers for The Flash (2023). As the Dark Flash explains, younger Barry spent so much time trying to avert Zod's attack that it mutated him into a monster. After punching the monster's mask off, they are shocked to discover it is a much older version of the younger Barry. Listen closely, and you can also hear Adam West's voice from a 1960s Batman universe.Īs the multiverse is collapsing around them, the two Barry Allens are visited by the same Speed Force creature that has been stalking the mainline Barry Allen, who looks to be some sort of combination between classic comic villains of The Flash, Savitar, and Reverse Flash. The chaotic sequence concludes with the biggest surprise of all, with the canceled Tim Burton film Superman Lives coming to the big screen for the first time, complete with a CGI Nicolas Cage as Superman. Also seen, through a CGI recreation, is a universe featuring both Christopher Reeve's Superman and Helen Slater's Supergirl as they watch this multiversal event occur. The first of these is a classical black-and-white universe, featuring what appears to be George Reeves' version of Clark Kent from the Adventures of Superman series and the classic Jay Garrick variant of The Flash. Slowly but surely, different timelines from across the DC multiverse begin creeping into Barry's disrupted timeline. ![]()
